Copa Alcantara extends for new season.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is inviting teams from outside the Philippine Football League (PFL) to compete in the country’s premier domestic cup competition, the Copa Palino Alcantara, for the first time.

Nine non-PFL clubs are slated to participate in the tournament, named after the late Filipino great who played for Barcelona, in a move that has been in the works for the past few years.

“The upcoming Copa Paulino Alcantara expansion is a much-needed shot in the arm to elevate the domestic club football scene. More teams means more matches and football experience,” said PFL Commissioner Coco Torre.

Previous editions have seen only PFL clubs participate in the Copa, but Toure may be toying with the idea of allowing teams from the college ranks or the armed forces to take part.

Kaya-Iloilo won in 2018 and 2021, Ceres-Negros reigned the 2019 edition while United City claimed the 2022 title.

The Copa differs from the PFL, in which teams that meet the PFF’s club regulation standards compete for the championship in a round-robin format.[The] PFF will send invitations to eligible and interested clubs/teams within the coming weeks in preparation for the Cup season. A workshop will be held thereafter to discuss all organizational aspects of the match,” the PFF said in its press release.

Sixty matches are being looked at for the season from June to September.
