The celebrated union between blockchain and gaming has faced several obstacles, leaving many wondering if the fledgling field of crypto and gaming will ever live up to its potential.
In the fifth episode of Hashing it out Podcast, Cointelegraph’s Elisha Owusu Akyaw and Animoca Brands CEO, Robby Yung, discuss how the blockchain gaming industry is moving forward despite the challenges.
Robbie Young believes there are problems on both sides. Regarding blockchain developers, Yeung argues that the industry has failed to educate the public about the benefits of blockchain technology. According to Young, people need to understand that owning their digital property is a modern technology.
On the other hand, Yung highlights that there is a conservative streak in the gaming industry, where gamers are reluctant to change. Young cited backlash from mobile gamers and free-to-play games as prime examples of conservative culture among gamers.
Young recalled how mobile gamers were shunned by the personal computer (PC) and console game communities, who felt that mobile phones could not provide an authentic gaming experience. He also cited the pushback free-to-play games received for introducing the concept of free-to-play and paying for in-game items. Young believes that the value of blockchain technology will eventually convince traditional gamers.

Some analysts say that Blockchain games are not fun. And financial rewards alone may not be enough to attract adoption. The CEO of Animoka Brands believes that such criticism is unfair to an industry that is barely three years old. According to Young, it takes time to make a decent game. He cited the mobile gaming industry, where most of the games released before Angry Birds are not memorable and growth in the gaming industry can be slow.

In the episode, Elisha and Young also discuss:
- How Game Developers Can Raise Capital
- Tokenomics for Blockchain Games
- The dynamics of free-to-play gaming with tokenized assets.
