The race to sign Sean Payton as head coach is well and truly underway, but it looks like the Denver Broncos are moving fast to bring the former New Orleans Saints head coach to the Mile High City.
According to recent reports, Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has personally reached out to Payton in an effort to convince the type of free agent head coach to come to town.
Denver waived Nathaniel Hackett the day after Christmas after the team looked disorganized on offense for most of the season. In fact, the Broncos finished 21st in yards per game during Hackett’s tenure as head coach, also last in scoring.
The Broncos eventually limped to a 5-12 record in a rollercoaster year that included a massive $245 million Russell Wilson contract extension and a $4.25 billion franchise takeover.
Denver Broncos head coach rumors: Sean Payton asked Bill Belichick for money to take the job.
Rumors are swirling that Payton is seeking an annual salary in the $20m to $25m range to come on board as head coach.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick reportedly takes home 20 months Payton’s demands, therefore, would place him right up there with the highest-paid head coaches in the league.
per SportyPete Carroll is the second highest paid head coach in the NFL, earning $15 million, while Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay comes in at #3 with a $14 million salary.
Of course there is no salary cap for coaches. And considering the fact that the Broncos’ new leadership has signaled a tendency to shed money for right personnel, Payton could find himself an attractive offensive subject from the franchise.
As things stand, however, the Carolina Panthers are also being credited with strong interest in Payton. Franchise owner David Tepper (reportedly worth $17 billion) faces another summer of uncertainty at the head coaching position and apparently has his eye on bringing Payton to town.
