MANILA, Philippines — The World Cup-bound Philippine women’s soccer team will be among the country’s best bets for gold at the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

In a Philippine Sports Writing Association (PSA) forum on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, Philippine Football General Secretary Atty. Ed Gastens said the Philippines has a “very real chance” to clinch the championship in the upcoming regionals.

“Cambodia has a real opportunity now given its preparations for its national women’s football team at the SEA Games and our committed and capable coaching staff,” he said.

“After the occupation of the Philippines AFF Women’s Championship trophy last year, they are really looking forward to winning another medal, if not gold,” he added.

The pool of competitors for the SEA Games includes the country of Vietnam, the current champion of the women’s football competition at the SEA Games.

With his confidence in the historic team, Gastanes said he already expects to see the two countries square off in the final.

He said that the SEA Games women’s final will be another historic event for us.

Aside from the regional event in Cambodia, the Philippines will also participate in several other invitational events.

Next month, the women will travel to Spain for the Panatar Cup. There will also be Olympic women’s qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics starting in April. They will compete against Pakistan, Tajikistan and Hong Kong. In Group E
