MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos Aaron Jude Bado and Flint Jara advanced to the gold medal round in their respective weight classes at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships at the Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday.
Badu stamped his class and dominated Malaysia’s Qayyum Arifin 5-0 via unanimous decision in the men’s flyweight semi-final.
Jara, on the other hand, needed to overcome a stiff challenge from Mongolia’s Ganbold Durjaniambo by split decision, 3-2, to secure his place in the men’s bantamweight final.
In the championship round, Badu is expected to have a tough time against home beat Thanarat Sengphat, who defeated Uzbekistan’s Makhmudkudir Mamirjanov 5-0.
Jara will face Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Altunbek for the bantamweight gold.
Altunbek defeated Islam Torubayev of Kyrgyzstan 5-0 in the semi-finals.
Two other Filipinos, Jericho Aquilar and Mark Lester Dorrance, however, failed to make it to the finals.
Featherweight Akiler fell to Kazakhstan’s Makhmud Sabirkan by unanimous decision, while bantamweight Durance also suffered a similar result at the hands of Uzbekistan’s Shodyurzhan Melikozev.
Melikozev is one of 10 Uzbeks who will compete for the gold medal in Wednesday’s final.
